Visualizing extracellular neurotransmitter dynamics:
How to use fluorescence microscopy to visualize neurotransmitter dynamics?
Brain cells communicate to each other by releasing signalling molecules but eavesdropping on their conversations remains a challenge.
Much is known about the communication between nerve cells and other cells in the brain. A lot of it has been inferred from measuring how brain cells respond to the exposure to signalling molecules or to their release in the brain (e.g. during the synaptic transmission of information). However, this is indirect. An increasing variety of new optical indicators now enable neuroscientist to directly observe the release and spread of signalling molecules in the brain using fluorescence microscopy
