Rural Electrification:
Which infrastructure is best for the Brazilian Pantanal?
A community is slated to get access to electricity, but a local leader first must illuminate the best infrastructure to supply it.
, , and
In the Brazilian Pantanal, electricity access isn't guaranteed. Many live without electricity, but this situation is about to change for a town called Porto Jofre. Energisa, the local energy council, has approved an electricity infrastructure project for this town, but what type of electricity infrastructure is best? This case study analyzes two types of electricity infrastructure: solar microgrids and expansion of the city grid. Students must consider Energisa's decision and the social, economic, and environmental effects of both types of infrastructure. At the end of the case study, students will decide which type of infrastructure they would build to bring electricity access to the town of Porto Jofre.
