“Mermaids” under Threat:
How can we monitor dugongs in Indonesia to aid in their protection?
What does it take to find—and protect—the ocean’s most elusive herbivore?
和
Dugongs are elusive marine mammals that depend on seagrass ecosystems, making them both ecologically important and challenging to study. This module explores how community knowledge, satellite data, drone surveys, and AI-assisted analysis can be integrated to monitor dugongs in Indonesia. By using dugongs as a flagship species, students learn how combining ecological science with emerging technologies and human perspectives can strengthen conservation and management efforts.
