Grid-Scale Green Hydrogen Energy Storage:
Is green hydrogen a viable option for grid-scale energy storage?
Power outages, carbon dioxide pollution, and energy independence are all factors pushing the world toward more and more renewable energy production, but how do we store it all?
, , , and
As renewable energy sectors like solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind grow to meet ever-increasing energy demands, we face a conundrum. How exactly do we store and distribute the energy generated from these intrinsically intermittent sources? Currently most of the world’s utility-scale energy storage comes in the forms of pumped hydroelectric storage, solar thermal energy storage, and batteries, but their current capacities and projected growth rates are insufficient to meet storage demands. Green hydrogen (hydrogen generated using net zero emission renewables) holds great potential as a reliable supplement for grid-scale energy storage.
