Urban Agriculture Applications:
Urban Agriculture as a Tool in the Resettlement Process
Urban agriculture has become an important avenue for community development, food security and economic stability in response to increased urbanization by empowering some of the most vulnerable populations worldwide.
Urban agriculture interventions in marginalized populations are recognized as tools for building community strength and connectivity. Current research indicates that urban agriculture has many public health benefits, such as improved diet and nutrition, and increased physical activity. Urban agriculture has existed in a variety of capacities to address access to food, all of which continue to have lasting impacts on the populations engaging with them. However, the impacts of Urban Agriculture go beyond just food security and access. The following cases provide support to the justification of Urban Agriculture as a tool for resettlement. Connecting three different cases to the historical context of Urban Agriculture with a global lens will provide a foundation for practitioners to create opportunity for interventions in refugee and immigrant communities.
