Pink Pineapple Case Study:
Instagrammable GMOs??: A Pink Pineapple Case Study
The genetically modified "PinkGlow" pineapple are flying off the shelfs, but not without criticism as to what purpose this aesthetic-pleasing fruit plays in a world faced by food insecurities.

The "PinkGlow" pineapple, which produces pink flesh, was developed by Del Monte Fresh Produce Co. in 2005 and begin to sell commercially in late 2020. The pineapple is able to have pink flesh due to the genetic modification of the enzymes to suppress the formation of carotenoids, which are responsible for the normal yellow flesh, in exchange for lycopene, which is responsible for pink pigment in fruits and plants. This genetically modified pineapple has caused a massive debate on the nature and intention of GMOs when their purpose is not actively involved in addressing global issues, such as food insecurity and climate change.
