In this 10-week collaboration, 34 Queens College students and 45 University of Abuja students came together to explore diplomacy and international relations in Africa from the precolonial period to the present. We began with pre-COIL activities, followed by icebreakers and self-introductions. Next, students were placed in 11 international teams and tasked with responding to scholarly essays on diplomacy and interstate relations. For the final project, each team created 3-6 minute videos for a simulated international conference of world leaders. Each team was asked to present an argument, based on evidence, and then to make recommendations to diplomats and world leaders based on lessons from African history (with one American and one Nigerian student speaking for each team). Students overcame the 5-hour time difference, and other challenges, to complete the final projects, discovering commonalities across cultures and forging new friendships. The two professors plan to continue their COIL journey!
