Communicating the Impacts of Climate Change:
How can we use scientific communication to address the impacts of climate change?
How do carbon emissions impact your community?
Scientists often need to communicate scientific data to the public in multiple ways. They might write an article, go on the news, or give a presentation. These are all part of scientific communication. In this case, you will learn how to communicate information about carbon emissions to your local community using the principles and practices of effective scientific communication. Based on your previous knowledge about carbon emissions, you'll focus on communicating solutions to increased carbon emissions and their harmful impact in your community.
If you engaged with the other cases in this series, you already examined ways in which individuals and communities have been impacted by the increase of CO2 emissions around the Detroit River area. This case will examine this topic by showcasing the stories, data, and testimonies of individuals. These narratives serve as an entryway into identifying community visions for reducing carbon emissions along the Detroit River Corridor. We invite you to share and reflect on your own relationship to the Detroit River, as well as propose interventions for reducing the carbon emissions as well.
The goal of this case is to help you communicate about your observations, solutions, and the impacts of CO2 emissions on one neighborhood in Detroit. As a final project, you will use sources of data and local stories to write an open letter or produce a digital project addressed to members of one of these neighborhoods. You may also use this case to communicate the impacts of CO2 emissions in your own neighborhoods and communities beyond the scope of this Gala case.
