Construction Sites as a “Mobile Commons”:
How do teams interact and collaborate on a construction site?
A construction site involves much more than you think: many interdependent team members aiming toward a common goal.
My work experience as a construction management intern has included working on three distinct project sites, interacting with various groups of people and completing different tasks daily. The interdependence seen in ecosystems of all sorts is mirrored on the construction site. The way information is communicated and skills are learned and shared in the construction industry demonstrates how these sites can be likened to the “commons.”
My experience working on construction sites and now learning about the definition of “commons” allowed me to form some thoughts about how the construction site can be seen as a type of “commons”, a “mobile commons”. The “commons” represent a shared space that may be physical, digital, or implied that allows people to come together and share ideas while benefitting and furthering the common mission.
