BREE 327 Design Project:
Retrofitting of the Macdonald Campus South Powerhouse
The South Powerhouse is one of the most important landmarks of McGill University's Macdonald Campus; can it be repurposed to avoid demolition by neglect?
, , , and
On Lakeshore Road, by the entrance to Macdonald Campus, there is a notable smokestack that dots the shore. This everyday historic relic is a part of the South Powerhouse. The powerhouse was designed for the purpose of heating campus buildings and filtering water on campus. Over a century of aging has left this building without use and on track to demolition by neglect. To avoid this fate, this project aims to retrofit the powerhouse so that it can be used as classrooms and lab space and install a geothermal system to heat the building more sustainably.
