The neighborhood of Pilsen and two neighborhoods near the elevated 606 trail are experiencing inftionary rents. In an effort to preserve affordability for current residents and maintain the character and history of these neighborhoods, Chicago put surcharges on demolition, making it more expensive for developers to tear down existing residential buildings. In this case, we investigate gentrification, possible strategies for maintaining affordability, and what the city's plan did for the neighborhoods of Pilsen and those along the 606 trail.
