An Intro to FVS-Online:
How can Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) help inform forest management decisions?
You are a silviculturist in the Lake States Region. Use FVS to provide management insights for your Forest Supervisor.
You just started a detail as a silviculturist with the USDA Forest Service and have been assigned to manage a white pine/red oak/white ash forest in the Lakes States Region. The previous silviculturist wrote a management plan with a 50-year rotation that starts this year. In the plan, you see a thinning entry for trees under 10 inches DBH that will result in a 50% residual canopy cover. However, the plan doesn't indicate a reason behind the thinning entry.
Your job is to:
1) Provide the Forest Supervisor with two management goals that would justify a thinning entry
2) Enter the appropriate thinning components into Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS)
3) Generate FVS outputs and visualizations for the Forest Supervisor, comparing end-of-rotation conditions with and without a thinning entry
