Many different musical scales have been developed in different cultures throughout the centuries, but the western chromatic scale is used in most of today's popular music.
Today's chromatic music scale is the result of centuries of musical exploration. This scale, consisting of 12 notes (7 white keys and 5 black keys on the piano), relies on the way in which harmonic frequencies are perceived.
