Montreal’s Green Shield Against the Heat:
Heat Island Mitigation in Montreal through Green Roof and Green Side-walls Infrastructure
To address Montreal's lethal urban heat islands, a solution proposes installing low-maintenance green roofs on city-owned buildings to reduce ambient temperatures and save energy.

We propose the installation of extensive, low-maintenance, green roofs and green walls on municipal buildings, which can bear the weight of such infrastructure. The use of short-growing, drought-resistant, perennial plants such as succulents, shrubs and grasses would help regulate the temperature and limit the heat absorption from the roofs and walls during the summer months. During the winter months, they would help insulate the buildings and can lead to energy savings.
