Sudan Virus Disease:
How has Sudan Virus Disease Impacted Uganda?
What is Sudan Virus Disease?
and
Sudan Virus Disease (SVD) is a strain of Ebola caused by the Sudan virus (SUDV). Symptoms of this disease include fever, diarrhea, muscle pain, sore throat, and vomiting. Severe symptoms of this disease are hemorrhagic manifestations, shock, multiorgan failure, and death. Most people initially developed a fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing about 7-11 days after initially contracting the disease (WHO, April 26). There have been eight previous outbreaks besides the most recent one in Uganda. Five of these outbreaks took place in Uganda, while three took place in Sudan. This disease has a high fatality rate of 41-70% in past outbreaks (WHO, Feb 1). There is no cure or vaccine for SVD; rather, treating the symptoms themselves, such as oxygen therapy to help people breathe better, is recommended for this disease.
