Contrecoeur expansion project for the port of Montreal:
Mitigating the impact of Montreal Port expansion to the population of an endangered species - Copper Redhorse
How can the port’s expansion be achieved without negatively impacting the Copper red horse and its habitat/ feeding grounds?
, , and
The Contrecoeur Port expansion sits at the centre of a critical environmental conflict: how do we grow essential infrastructure without sacrificing one of Québec’s most endangered fish—the Copper Redhorse? The species relies on the shallow, vegetated feed grounds which lie directly within the project footprint. With fewer than a few thousand individuals remaining, these disturbances from port construction threaten its survival and require mitigation. In our project, we design solutions that will help protect this endangered species found nowhere else on Earth, whilst meeting the economic needs of Montreal.
