Renewable Energy Supply in Puvirnituq:
Is renewable electricity a viable option in Northern Quebec?
Remote Northern communities' lack of connection to electricity leaves them reliant on diesel fuel for heating, light, and cooking.
and
There are approximately 178 remote Indigenous and Northern communities that are not connected to the North American electricity grid and natural gas infrastructure. These remote communities generally rely on diesel fuel for electricity generation and home heating. However, the fuel is expensive, carbon- and particulate- emitting, can leak or spill, and lastly, aging generators can also fail when needed most. Often with only one primary power source, a generator interruption could leave a remote community without power for an unknown period. As such, the goal of this project is to supply most, if not all, the energy needed in one of the Northern Quebec Indigenous Communities by a renewable energy source. The current source, diesel, will be used only as a backup.
