AquAdvantage Salmon:
Is genetically modified salmon the answer to sustainable fishing?
Genetically modified salmon has recently been approved by the FDA. While this could solve the problem of overfishing in the environment, are the benefits worth the potential risks?
, , , and
In 2015, AquAdvantage Salmon received approval from the FDA to hit the public markets. These genetically engineered fish were designed to mature faster than their wild counterparts, increasing aquaculture yields and ideally decreasing fish costs. FDA approval requires that both human and environmental health impacts of the product be examined and in the case of AquAdvantage Salmon, these impacts were not significant enough to delay or prevent the approval of this GMO. However, there is still controversy within the scientific community and the public about whether or not the benefits of AquAdvantage Salmon outweigh the risks.
