An Indoor Nature Walk for Older Adults:
How can indoor nature installations positively impact the well-being of older adults in senior living environments?
Nature deficit disorder effects all ages: Can environmental programs with older adults help alleviate the effects?
Engaging persons in outdoor activities supports wellbeing; however, barriers exist in supporting the exploration of nature in older adult communities. We implemented a design called the Indoor Nature Walk to bring elements of nature indoors to residents at Marston Court, a care home in North Oxford, UK. Over the course of three months, observations and interviews with residents and staff helped inform walk design. Interviews indicated a strong interest and desire for natural interior design. The Indoor Nature Walk pilot project highlights the value of providing older adults within institutionalized aging environments access to natural spaces. We propose that the Indoor Nature Walk could be utilized in the creation of a nature design model for future aging communities .
