Chemical Spray Distance to Save Biodiversity:
Pesticide Drift Mitigation Through Adjacent Application
Can a simple intervention to reduce the range of spray from pesticide application equipment help l
and
Overall, the contamination of cloud water with pesticides poses a threat to biodiversity. Unfortunately, the current pesticide application methods generate a significant amount of chemical drift, which contributes to this issue. All the three main pesticide spreading equipment (the boom sprayer, the air blast sprayers and the handheld spray guns) spray relatively broadly at a significant distance from the plant, which make them prone to drift (Hurner, L.A., 2017). The aim of the design project summarized in this module is to conceive an efficient pesticide spraying device that limits chemical drift significantly by limiting the distance between the outlets and the targeted plant.
