Offshore Wind Energy:
What are the Benefits and Challenges of Offshore Wind?
While offshore wind has great potential to accelerate the clean energy transition, there are many societal and economic barriers standing in the way of widescale deployment in the United States.

Offshore wind energy is one form of clean energy that has potential to replace traditional fossil energy. Compared to onshore wind, offshore wind has higher potential power generation and higher capacity factors leading to significant increases in total energy generation. This case will begin by looking at the history and basics of wind and energy, followed by a discussion around some barriers the US has experienced and will continue to experience regarding offshore wind development. After looking at these in light of the success Europe has seen with offshore wind, we will then look at how these barriers can be overcome in the US and some of the benefits of offshore wind over onshore as well as some different variations on offshore wind. We will cap out this module by looking at some of the future potential for offshore wind technology.
