Charging lithium-ion batteries extremely quickly is essential for driving mass adoption of electric vehicles. How can we understand and overcome the technological challenges currently holding back a fully-electrified future?

In the case study, we first present a technology background of batteries as a whole, then explore how Li-ion cells work, and briefly quantify fast charging. Next, an in-depth examination of the challenges of fast-charging Li-ion cells. We then discuss the current state-of-the-art research with regard to mitigating these issues, and then look to the near future to see how fast charging may be implemented. By exploring these topics, we hope the reader gains valuable insight on the burgeoning technology that is fast-charge lithium-ion batteries and a deep understanding of the challenges moving forwards. The U.S. Department of Energy has set a goal to reduce the charging time of an EV battery to under 15 minutes. How can we turn this i a reality?
