In May, 2024, an outbreak of the Oropouche virus (OROV) was reported in two provinces in Cuba. This virus is spread to humans through mosquito bites and causes symptoms such as fever, nausea, chills, and even meningitis. OROV cases have increased throughout South and Central America and spread to new countries, including Cuba, due to climate change and other factors. Response to this outbreak in Cuba includes vector control and disease surveillance.
